Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
